Dedicated to Christoph Arciszewski von Artischau (1592-1656), Polish nobleman and officer in the service of the WIC, by Joan Blaeu.

This map was made during the period when the Dutch attempted to drive the Portuguese from their various trading posts. In Brazil this struggle ultimately failed, but for nearly 25 years (1630-1654) the Dutch possessed several Portuguese provinces in the northeast of Brazil.
