Dapper Olfert (1636-1689)
Olfert Dapper was a doctor and geographer of Amsterdam who wrote history and geography books, although he only travelled in the Netherlands. He used reports by Jesuit missionaries and Dutch explorers. His Description of Africa (1668) is a key text for African studies. He also published books about China, India, Persia, Georgia, and Arabia. His books became well-known in his own time. They were beautifully illustrated with maps, views, and local scenes.
