Rare second state with imprint of Joannes Janssonius, decorative borders on four sides: Top border: Pomeiooc, Carolina, S. Augustin, Havana Portus, S. Domingo and Cartagena. Bottom border: Olinda in Pharnambuco, Cusco, Potosi, I.La Mocha in Chili, Rio de Janeiro and Mexico. Side borders: Costumed figures..
This map belongs to a folio-sized set of the four continents by Jodocus Hondius. It is likely that Pieter van den Keere ordered these maps to be engraved, or engraved them himself, for no other Amsterdam engraver would have dared to use Van den Keere's "trademark" of a clock face and skull. Van den Keere had remarried soon after 1622 and before long ran into financial difficulties, forcing him in 1623 to sell most of his copperplates. It is perhaps on this occasion that his nephew Jodocus Hondius Jr. purchased the newly engraved maps of the four continents for his atlases. It is assumed that Van den Keere did not print any copies from these copperplates once they were engraved. (Schilder)
"This very rare map is most easily distinguished by the chipped top right hand corner of the plate that appears in virtually all known examples." (Burden)
"In 1630 both Blaeu and Janssonius published an Appendix to the work of Mercator. This marked the beginning of a great period of competitive Dutch atlas production. Only four known examples of Janssonius' atlas survive; they contain this map in its third state. . . ." (Burden)
After this edition, the bottom border was removed because the map was too large to fit in an atlas.
