Old antique map of America by A. Montanus 1671

The De Nieuwe en Onbekende Wereld by Arnoldus Montanuswas originally planned to appear in 1670. However, delays in acquiring the information he needed deferred publication until the following year. It was printed by Jacob de Meurs, who had an agreement with John Ogilby to produce an English edition which appeared later in the same year.

This general map of the American continent is attributed to Gerardus Schagen (c.1642-c.1690) an engraver, publisher and art dealer in Amsterdam. It is derived from the Nicolaas Visscher map of the same title published c. 1658, itself drawn from the wall map of the world by Joan Blaeu, 1648.
