Map of England, oriented to the North.
Third state of De Ram's England map, published by Ottens.
The interesting symbolic title cartouche on De Ram's England and Wales map establishes the original publication date close to 1689. A Roman warrior - representing William III - stands upon a prone leonine figure (England), while offering his hand to the crowned Queen Mary. Jubilant cherubs flank the Stuart-Orange coat of arms.
The map is a detailed one, carefully engraved and with as many place names as can reasonably be accomodated. Roads are shown, and a lengthy panel to the left above the title cartouche lists the cities and market towns with their coordinates and distances from London. To the right, the Dogger Bank is prominent in the North Sea below a smaller dedicatory cartouche.
