Old antique world map - Double hemisphere world map by Nicolaes van Geelkercken.
Date on map: 1617
Shirley: "According to the last part of the text on the left-hand cartouche, Spilbergen's passage around the strait of Magellan (which actually took place in Januray 1616) is stated to have taken place in the previous year of 1615, thus indicating that the map was being prepared in 1616. However the first issue known, of which I have only come across two copies, is dated 1617 and still shows only Magellan's strait. Four or five examples are extant dated 1618 ..." Later states: 1632 and undated. In all the states later than 1617 Le Maire's strait has been added. In our copy, the added "R" in the title word "TERRARUM" is not yet present, which makes that this copy is a state before Shirley's first state, unrecorded until now.
