This is the last edition (of six) of the Liesvelt Bible, the first full translation of the Bible into Dutch. A particular feature of this Bible is that it was the first reformational Dutch Bible translation in the Netherlands, which as far as possible was based on Luther's Bible translation.

Jacob Van Liesvelt (Antwerp , c. 1490 - 1545 ) was the largest provider of Dutch Bible editions in the first half of the sixteenth century. One of the most famous editions is this Bible of 1542, which was furnished with outspoken reformational marginal notes. In this edition he also put a woodcut picture of the Devil as a bearded monk with a rosary and goat's feet. This infuriated the Catholic church and was used as the base for getting Van Liesvelt condemned to death. He was beheaded on the 28th November 1545.

The map, which is based on the big wall map made by Lucas Cranach around 1510, appeared in this Bible from 1532 on. It shows the entire Holy Land from Damascus as far as the Red Sea on both sides of the Jordan. It shows also the road of the Exodus through the Sinai Mountains.
