Paul Hermann (1640-1695) was director of the Leiden Botanical Garden from 1679-1695. He did excellent, vigorous work in depicting his plants, and one group of his drawings of Ceylon plants, made in the second half of the 17th century, had an interesting history. They were carefully preserved for many years by a series of collectors, one of whom finally brought them to the attention of Linné in 1745. Linné found them so exciting that he based his Flora Zeylandica on them in 1747. (Hunt)
