Category:  Medieval manuscripts > Text Leaf

Illuminated manuscript leaf from a Flemish Book of Hours, Use of Sarum.

Bruges, ca. 1450, made for English use.

Latin manuscript on parchment, written in Gothic textualis on both sides in brown ink with red rubrics. Single-column text within ruled lines. Initials in burnished gold (24ct) on blue and pink grounds, with white detailing; smaller initials with penwork flourishes. Foliate border decoration in colours and gold.
The suffrage begins “Gaude lux Londoniarum, Thoma tutor animarum.” The devotional text on both sides has been deliberately cancelled with diagonal pen strokes, and the red heading is partially effaced, probably during the English Reformation in or after 1538.

Sheet size: 190 x 140mm (7½ x 5½ inches).

Bruges, ca. 1450.
