Shelduck - male and female, by C. Nozeman & M. Houttuyn. 1770-1829

This work was published over a period of almost sixty years. Nozeman started this enterprise; he possessed a cabinet of animals. He discusses the native birds, their nests, habitats, and eggs. Quite a few plates show the birds with their eggs. After Nozeman died, Martinus Houttuyn took over the editing of the book. When Houttuyn died in 1798, the publishers likely continued the work with the assistance of C.J. Temminck, who supplied many descriptions.
Each volume contains fifty hand-coloured copperplates; according to the first two volumes, the drawings are due to N. Muis, whereas W. Hendriks is mentioned in the fourth volume.
The price of the complete set of five volumes was fl.525.00, which makes it the most expensive book for sale in Holland at that period.
