Rare first edition of this unusual bird's-eye view
Venice by Giacomo Franco. c. 1609
This queer view of Venice, unusually upwards orientated, is seen as if it were under a lens or inside a sphere. The view and its round motif are placed in the centre of a sumptuous cartouche. A view of Rialto Bridge stands above, while another one with the winged lion is placed below.
In the second state, the illustration is seen as the frontispiece of a work describing the costumes and dresses of the Venetian people, as well as processions and other ceremonies.
