Norway by F. Reilly. 1789
Franz Johann Joseph von Reilly (1766–1820)
Franz Johann Joseph von Reilly was an Austrian cartographer, publisher, and writer who became one of the most important figures in late 18th- and early 19th-century cartography in Vienna. He initially studied law and worked in civil service, but soon devoted himself entirely to geography, cartography, and publishing. His major works were Schauplatz der fünf Theile der Welt (1789–1795), an ambitious world atlas in several volumes, considered the first world atlas published in Austria, and Grosser Deutscher Atlas (1796), a large-scale atlas of the German lands, important for its detail and accuracy.
His maps are admired for their precision, artistry, and clarity. Reilly’s atlases were some of the first Austrian-produced works to compete with the established European centres of map production.
